- People want to have convenient, safe, and clean residential environment. Various concepts for smart home is being developed to provide various intelligent services based on resident's location. As a method to detect the resident's location, we have proposed PILAS (pyroeletric infrared sensor-based indoor location aware system) that used an array of PIR (pyroelectric infrared) sensors on the ceiling. However, it is difficult to determine the arrangement of sensors because there are numerous ways to arrange them, and each arrangement gives different performance. For example, number of sensors, their geometric arrangement, radius of sensor detection are the major factors affecting the performance of PILAS. Therefore, this paper presents five performance indexes to evaluate the sensor arrangements.
